Any ideas that would encourage us all to use our bikes more?
Urban areas like Bristol have done a lot to promote cycling and better routes for cyclists. More locally I think Farcycles in Faringdon have done good things. Cyclists pass through the village, but it is unusual to see anybody cycling in and around the village. Are we the only ones who have cycles in our garage that we rarely use? There are some daunting barriers to cycling around here. Crossing the A420 can feel perilous and the road to Bampton is not appealing for occasional cyclists, but I wondered if there were some small things that we could do that would encourage children and adults to get on their bikes more. Would it make any difference, for instance, if the gates at each end of the path across the croft were made more cycle friendly, or if places on footpaths which get very wet and muddy could be be made more passable in all weathers. a few months ago I met two people who had borrowed or hired bicycles from Mollies on the path to the Hutts and said they hoped to have cycle ride in the country. I described a possible route that might work for them but they were understandably hesitant. Perhaps we could come up with a local circular route that with a little imagination and work would be of benefit not only to us in the Parish but to other as well.
